This game (idea) is to help replicate and reflect the experiences of having social anxiety based on my own. It is a 2D side-scrolling platformer that relies not on the platforming skills of the player, but rather the reflexes of the player. The player does not directly control the main character and must spam the keyboard to move the character. In increasingly faster intervals, the character will need to overcome terrain obstacles. The screen will darken momentarily and eyes will appear, demanding something of the player (a button command/combination). If the player fails to satisfy the command/combination, the character dies and the game ends. If they succeed, they overcome the obstacle and keep going. Since this is only an idea, it's not decided whether or not the whole game would be one long course or a level-by-level game.
My experience with social anxiety has often manifested itself as making me incredibly self-conscious and repeatedly second-guessing myself on my behavior with others as well as getting anxious in various social situations. In the game, the eyes appear during an obstacle and demand something of the player which is how my self-consciousness frequently feels. Failure to do so takes a toll on me which is why the consequence for failing is so grave. This game takes form in a 2D terrain to indicate how social anxiety can make solutions and paths feel singular; the only way to progress is to listen to what my inner paranoia, or the eyes, are saying.
